Winter Queen by Golphee Winter Queen by Golphee
Time for some winter blues! Which is ironic because the day I finished this, the sun came out and it was ludicrously hot for so early in the year. At any rate, here's a blue lion for you! Because why not?
I tried a new fur technique with this one, which seems to work in some places but not in others. I used more or less the exact same brush for the entire thing, the settings of which are round, 65% opacity, 20% flow, 20% hardness and about 35px in size. I'm not sure if it looks too "gritty" or not - any thoughts from you guys would be appreciated :D

Enjoy!

About 6 hours, Adobe Photoshop CS4. References were used.

Thank you! Erm, I guess the head took about 3-4 hours maybe? Possibly a bit longer, I'm not too sure ;)

Hehe, yeah feline heads and canine heads are pretty different! Easier than horses though. Horse heads are the bane of my soul :P

Love that ear *-*
Your fur detail is amazing considering the sleek fur that lions have..i especially love the folds of the skin in the neck
Just curious, did you paint this in grayscale and then use color/overlay layers to color it, or just paint it using those colors to begin with? Either way, it looks beautiful<333
I wish that one day i could do an art trade with you ;w;

Thank you! :D I'm glad you like it!

I've had this question a few times, and I can understand why a lot of people ask. I have in the past made images in greyscale and added colour afterwards, but I don't recommend it because it is very difficult to get the colors to look the way you want them to. This was done in colour from the start, although I did add a filter over the top to make the saturation a little more intense at the end.

I'd be happy to do an art trade with you sometime! Your art is beautiful I can't at the moment because of school, but maybe in a month or two if you're still interested :D

Thanks again!

You're very welcome c:

Ive only done grayscale a couple of times before, but i understand that it is best for monochromatic paintings and since this has mostly blue hues i was just curious which method you used

And sure, thats fine with me.

i think its beautiful, but if youd like some feedback on how the fur worked, ive got some:

places it worked really well: above the eyes, in the neck folds, inside the ear
places it could use tweaking: bridge of her nose, under the eyes

maybe you wont have to change the brush at all, but the angle of your strokes? even so, you did a masterful job and it works really well.

Many thanks for the critique! I agree with the areas you've pointed out. I think it's because I panicked and used the smudge tool on the bridge of the nose, so it's good to know to avoid doing that next time. Thank you! :D

Gritty? No, actually it looks pretty soft. Plus, I'm having a really hard time finding a flaw in that gorgeous fur! That does it, you have me beaten, in spades, when it comes to realistic fur. Even you can't deny it this time!
After downloading/zooming in on it, I think I have a fair idea of what you're doing. I'm wondering if you have the lioness as a flat base layer of color with a second "white" (highlights/bulging areas) layer, and a third, or spare white layer with fur added, above those? Hope that made sense. ^^;

You should take one of these high-detail paintings and upload its .psd file (yes, dA can do that) someday so people can dissect your technique. Probably a spare .psd file saved/created the same date you upload it so you'll still have the file with the oldest creation date on it. I don't know why I said that last part, it just sounds like a good precaution. XD

Awesome work, bud! :D

Haha thanks bud! And dangit, I will deny it! Your fur is still one of my no. 1 inspiration sources, and don't even get me started on my hair and skin textures compared to yours - you still most certainly have me there!
You're pretty close. I actually only worked on the lioness on a single layer, but the processes you listed aren't far off. I started with a base where I just slapped a load of colours down, then drew alternating darker and lighter colours over it in the pattern I wanted the fur to have. I did, however add in some highlights against the whitest parts towards the end, so that kind of counts as a seperate stage.
Oh, I never thought of doing that. That's a pretty good idea! I wish more artists uploaded their PSD files because it's really interesting, not only to see their stages, but also to see how different people use different features on PS to achieve the same effect. I'll have to try that sometime :D

All I do is fake a fur texture with light and shadows; you actually bother to draw every strand! You win that contest. As for skin and long hair, I may have you on those but you haven't done either one, digitally at least, in quite a while so they can't be fairly compared.
You've got more nerve than I do, then. I can't shake the likely possibility I'm going to change my mind about the color scheme before I finish a piece. XD
Try it! I'd love to see your technique too. I know I saw it when we did the collab piece but it's been a while and you've likely changed how you do it since then. :D
